In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Dr. Simarta Brennan. We delved into the fascinating journey that led Dr. Samara to become an author. Her new book, “The Parts We Don’t Talk About,” is a compelling read that delves into the world of healthcare from multiple perspectives. What inspired her to write this book was her unique position as both a physician and a patient, having been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and being a mother to a child with congenital heart disease. It’s a powerful story of navigating the healthcare system, advocating for loved ones, and finding the path from surviving to thriving.

We also dug deep into the world of multiple sclerosis, a condition that Dr. Samara herself faces. She emphasized the importance of understanding the diversity of how the disease can manifest in different individuals. This awareness can help break down preconceived notions and facilitate better communication between healthcare providers and patients.

Dr. Samara shed light on the mysterious cause of multiple sclerosis, which remains unknown but likely involves a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. She stressed that open-ended and individualized communication is essential for those dealing with the disease.

The emotional aspect of living with chronic illnesses was another significant topic. Dr. Samara highlighted the role of grief in this process, emphasizing that acceptance is a powerful tool in moving forward.

Lastly, we discussed how friends and family can support someone dealing with a chronic illness. It’s all about creating a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, being patient, and offering positive and constructive support.
