When people work together, great things can happen. In this episode, Dr. Thea Blystone shares how using a multi-disciplinary team approach helps doctors, pharmacists, and other professionals care for patients in a better way.
Dr. Blystone is a clinical pharmacist who helps doctors by working with their patients between visits. She helps track their progress, answer questions, and make sure their medications are working. This allows doctors to focus on what they do best while making sure patients are fully supported.
Why Working Together Matters
Too often in healthcare, people stay in their “lane.” Doctors do their part, nurses do theirs, and pharmacists stick to theirs. But this kind of thinking builds walls. It keeps people from talking to each other and helping patients as a team.
A multi-disciplinary team approach breaks down those walls. Instead of thinking, “Is this my job?” people start asking, “How can we help this patient together?” This mindset helps reduce burnout and makes care more personal.
Creating More Room for Everyone
Dr. Blystone says healthcare is not a single-lane road anymore. It’s a busy highway. The more lanes we create, the more teamwork we need. And that means more chances to share the work and reduce stress.
Trying to do everything alone can lead to burnout. But when people share tasks based on their strengths, everyone wins; including the patient.
The Fear of Not Knowing
Many people in healthcare are scared to admit when they don’t know something. But asking for help or letting someone else take the lead doesn’t make you weak; it shows you’re smart. In a good multi-disciplinary team approach, no one has to know everything. Each team member brings something special to the table.
Letting Others Shine
Dr. Blystone encourages healthcare workers to stop trying to carry it all. When you let others use their skills, it creates more time, better care, and stronger teamwork. Delegating isn’t losing control. It’s trusting your team to do their part.
She also supports other pharmacists by teaching them how to expand their careers beyond traditional roles and create new ways to help people.
A Mindset Shift That Helps Everyone
It’s not just about changing rules or adding people. It’s about changing how we think. Instead of competing or worrying about control, healthcare workers need to focus on the patient. The more we support each other, the better care we give.
This mindset doesn’t only apply to medicine. It works in any team—schools, businesses, families. When people stop fighting for control and start working together, everything works better.
