In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Mandii Brown, also known as the relatable counselor, to explore a topic close to many hearts—church trauma and the path to healing within spiritual communities.

Mandii and I delved into the profound analogy of different denominations being like children in a shared spiritual house, all looking at the same sky. We discussed the varied practices and beliefs within the black church, acknowledging the trauma and hurt that can occur and emphasizing the need for honest conversations to facilitate healing.

We touched on the diverse interpretations of teachings, the impact of historical translations, and the importance of questioning belief systems. Mandii eloquently highlighted the significance of acknowledging church trauma and hurt, naming these experiences, and collectively addressing them as a community.

As we navigated this sensitive terrain, Mandii shed light on the complexities of church rules, the creation of denominations, and the challenge of determining whose teachings are being followed. We unraveled the layers of accountability, especially for church leaders, and the necessity of creating safe spaces for dialogue without condemnation.

Our conversation extended to the geographical nuances, dispelling the myth that church trauma is exclusive to the South. Mandii shared her experiences and emphasized the need for validation, transparency, and a collective commitment to healing.

The discussion took an insightful turn as we explored the role of education in the process. Drawing parallels with anti-racism and anti-oppression work, we highlighted the need for consistent efforts, time, and accountability within spiritual communities.

Mandii brought up a crucial point about the delicate nature of addressing church issues without causing offense, particularly in the Southern context. We acknowledged the uphill battle of leadership accountability, emphasizing the role of education in fostering understanding and growth.

Towards the end, we discussed practical steps to facilitate healing within the church. Mandii stressed the importance of validating experiences, creating safe spaces, and encouraging professional mental health support. We explored the concept of faith-based practitioners and the potential for dedicated mental health ministries within churches.
