I’ve had the privilege of speaking on many stages and podcasts, but this conversation with Jason LaChance on Knockin’ Doorz Down stands out. We went deep. Deep into the unconscious patterns that so many of us carry. Patterns that create self-doubt, sabotage our success, and keep us from showing up as our most powerful selves.
As an integrative physician, trauma-informed trainer, and NLP master practitioner, I’ve worked with countless clients navigating fear, imposter syndrome, and limiting beliefs. What I’ve learned, and what I shared on this episode, is that self-doubt isn’t always ours. Often, it’s inherited.
When we get curious about our internal dialogue, we find that many of our thoughts were installed long ago, by people who may not have intended harm but planted seeds of doubt all the same.
Understanding the Origin of Self-Doubt
Many of us grew up hearing things like:
-
“Be realistic.”
-
“Don’t dream too big.”
-
“That’s not how people like us succeed.”
Even well-meaning advice can turn into unconscious programming that keeps us stuck. One of the most liberating things we can do is question the source. Ask, “Whose voice is this? Is it true? Is it mine?”
Self-doubt thrives in silence and ambiguity. But when we bring awareness to the beliefs we’ve internalized, we begin to reclaim our narrative.
Resistance Isn’t Rebellion, It’s Protection
I often get asked how to overcome resistance, especially when doing the inner work. My answer? First, recognize that resistance is not the enemy. It’s the nervous system doing its job, protecting you from perceived danger, even if that danger is simply the discomfort of change.
By listening with compassion, you begin to understand the resistance and, with the right tools, gently move through it instead of bulldozing past it.
Emotional Intelligence Begins With Listening
One of the most powerful skills I’ve developed as a physician and coach is listening, really listening. Not just to others, but to myself. When we learn to listen to the language we use, the patterns we repeat, and the energy we bring, we gain clarity and control.
The words we speak reflect the thoughts we think. And those thoughts are shaped by deeply held beliefs that often go unchecked. Language isn’t just communication, it’s creation.
Confidence Is Built, Not Born
In the episode, Jason and I talked about the process of building confidence. Not performing it. Not faking it. Building it. And it starts with celebrating the small wins and letting go of perfectionism.
You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect to feel worthy. The more we anchor into our wins, the more we train our brains to trust ourselves. That trust becomes the foundation for lasting confidence.
Rewiring the Mind with NLP and Timeline Therapy®
Much of my work involves helping people move beyond limiting beliefs using techniques like Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and Timeline Therapy®. These modalities allow us to go to the root of self-defeating patterns, often formed in childhood, and update the belief system in a way that honors both truth and healing.
One of the most common patterns I see is the tendency to shrink. Shrink to fit into boxes, roles, or expectations that were never meant for us. But we can unlearn that. We can stand tall in our full, multidimensional identity.
Everything you need is already within you. When you learn to listen to your own wisdom and release the narratives that no longer serve you, transformation becomes inevitable.
Overcoming self-doubt isn’t a one-time event. It’s a practice. A commitment to showing up with honesty, curiosity, and compassion. And with the right tools and support, you can do more than you imagined.
