When Getting Lost Becomes the Lesson
What began as a family adventure turned into a journey of deeper discovery. In this episode of Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and the Brain, Dr. Maiysha Clairborne shares reflections from her recent trip to Japan and the unexpected lessons that came from literally getting lost. From missed trains to unexpected detours, each moment revealed something powerful about flexibility, awareness, and letting go of control.
Let’s explore how moments of confusion—whether while traveling or communicating—can become opportunities to deepen our understanding, trust, and curiosity.
Lost Can Be the Lesson
Getting lost is often seen as failure, but it can be one of life’s greatest teachers. When the path we expect suddenly changes, we are invited to slow down and notice the world around us. Losing direction shifts our focus from reaching a destination to appreciating the journey itself.

In Japan, a missed train became a moment of connection. Strangers turned into guides, and what started as anxiety transformed into gratitude. Let’s remember that when we stop resisting what feels uncomfortable, we open ourselves to growth that we couldn’t have planned for.
Challenging Expectations
Expectations shape how we see the world, but they also limit it. When reality doesn’t align with what we imagined, frustration often follows. Yet these moments reveal our hidden assumptions and biases.
Let’s use disruption as an opportunity for awareness. Every unmet expectation helps us see more clearly where we’ve been holding on too tightly—to plans, to identities, or to beliefs about how things “should” be. When we release that grip, we make space for presence, curiosity, and peace.
Discovery Through Getting Lost
When we stop seeing “lost” as failure and start seeing it as exploration, something shifts. Being lost challenges our need for certainty. It invites flexibility, patience, and creativity. Whether it’s navigating a foreign train system or a difficult conversation, the act of getting lost teaches us how to adapt.
Let’s view confusion as a doorway rather than a dead end. In the moments we feel most uncertain, we often find the clarity we were searching for.

Finding Wonder in the Unexpected
Frustration often marks the beginning of discovery. What starts as inconvenience can turn into awe when we allow ourselves to notice what’s unfolding. In Japan, a wrong turn led to an encounter with kindness. Another detour revealed music, laughter, and small moments of joy that wouldn’t have been found otherwise.
Let’s practice noticing what beauty hides inside the chaos. Sometimes the best part of the journey is what we find when we stop rushing to get there.
Communication as Exploration
Being “lost” doesn’t only happen on the road—it happens in our relationships and conversations too. Communication, like travel, isn’t always linear. We get lost in misunderstandings, assumptions, and emotional reactions. But if we approach communication as an exploration instead of a performance, getting lost can deepen connection.
When we stop striving for the perfect response and start listening with curiosity, we find the kind of understanding that can’t be scripted. Let’s stay open to being surprised by what we learn in the space between speaking and listening.
