Bridging the Space Between What We Know and What We Do
We live in a time where access to knowledge is limitless, yet the challenge lies in putting that knowledge into practice. In this episode of Behind Beliefs, Behaviors and the Brain, Dr. Maiysha Clairborne and guest Kgomotso Sekhute explore the knowing-doing gap—the distance between understanding something and actually living it out.
Let’s explore why knowing what to do isn’t enough, how our beliefs and habits hold us back, and how we can use awareness, compassion, and neuroplasticity to move from theory to transformation.
Why We Know More Than We Do
Many of us gather knowledge but struggle to translate it into consistent action. The knowing-doing gap is often filled with unseen barriers—self-limiting beliefs, old habits, and fear of change.
When we carry unhealed trauma or experiences from previous workplaces, we may show up guarded or hesitant. Let’s remember that awareness is the first step toward change. When we recognize the internal voices that shape our choices, we can decide which ones to turn up, which to turn down, and which to mute altogether.

Rewriting the Stories That Hold Us Back
Every one of us carries stories from our upbringing, culture, and past experiences. These stories influence how we lead, how we communicate, and how we connect. If we grew up believing the world isn’t safe, or that vulnerability is weakness, those beliefs can block our ability to build trust or take action.
Let’s hold our identities lightly. When we stop saying “I am” as if it’s the end of the sentence and start asking “What else am I becoming?”, we open the door to possibility. Growth happens when we allow ourselves to be learners again—to try, fail, reflect, and try differently next time.

The Power of Awareness and Neuroplasticity
Our brains are adaptable. The more we practice new habits, the more we reshape our neural pathways. Let’s intentionally challenge our patterns by surrounding ourselves with diverse thinkers who see problems differently. This not only expands creativity but also strengthens empathy and flexibility.
Neuroplasticity reminds us that even deeply ingrained habits can change. Every time we pause before reacting, choose curiosity over judgment, or listen with compassion instead of defensiveness, we are rewiring our brains toward growth.
Turning Knowledge into Action
Closing the knowing-doing gap means building consistent habits and emotional regulation. It’s not enough to know the right thing to say—we must practice saying it with empathy. It’s not enough to understand mindfulness—we must choose presence in the moment.
Let’s see knowledge as potential energy and action as the spark that activates it. When we integrate awareness, skill-building, and compassion, knowledge becomes transformation.
