Questions are more than words. They shape how we think, influence how we feel, and determine how we connect with others. In this episode of Behind Beliefs, Behaviors & The Brain, I sit down with Dr. Conor Hughes, a human catalyst, NLP master practitioner, and expert in using powerful questioning to unlock growth and awareness.
We explore how the brain responds to questions, how assumptions influence our words, and why asking the right kind of question can be the difference between healing and harm.
The Art and Science of Asking Better Questions
We ask questions every day; what time is it, what’s for dinner, or where did I put my keys? But asking better questions is both an art and a science. It’s not just about gathering information. It’s about helping others think deeply, reflect, and grow.
Powerful questioning requires awareness of what we’re really asking, the assumptions behind it, and the emotional impact it may have.

How Questions Paint Pictures in the Mind
Every question creates an image in the listener’s mind. When we ask, “What would happen if you succeeded?” or “What does safety look like to you?”, we paint a picture that guides their thoughts and emotions.
As Dr. Conor shares, “Every question pulls apart into two chunks—the things we agree are happening, and the piece of information we want.”
Our goal as communicators, leaders, or therapists is to make sure the picture we paint leads toward insight, not confusion or pain.
Every Question Carries Hidden Meaning
Every question assumes something. For example, when someone asks, “How sad do you feel?”, the brain searches for sadness, replaying related memories. This can bring awareness but can also reopen old wounds.
That’s why intentional, trauma-informed questioning matters. The brain literally relives what it’s asked to recall, so the wrong type of question can unintentionally cause harm or retraumatization.

The Power of “What” and “How”
“What” and “how” questions are the most empowering tools for change.
-
What makes you feel confident?
-
How can we approach this differently?
These questions open the mind and encourage solutions. In contrast, yes-or-no questions close the door to deeper reflection. As Dr. Conor reminds us, “If you don’t want to go to the past, do not ask why.”
Instead, focus on questions that lead people forward.
When the Body Answers Before Words Do
Words aren’t the only responses to questions. The body speaks first. In therapy, coaching, and leadership, you can often see transformation before it’s spoken. The eyes shift, posture changes, or breathing slows.
“The real answer,” Dr. Conor explains, “is not always found in words. It often shows up in the body.”
As leaders or practitioners, paying attention to these subtle shifts can reveal more truth than any verbal response.

Curiosity Builds Better Leaders
In leadership and mentorship, powerful questioning creates growth on both sides. Good questions don’t just find answers—they inspire independent thinking.
When leaders ask, “What do you need to succeed?” instead of giving directions, they empower others to take ownership. Likewise, mentors who guide through curiosity rather than instruction help their mentees uncover their own wisdom.
Asking better questions isn’t just a communication tool; it’s a path to shared understanding.
Conclusion:
The power of questioning lies not in the answer but in what it awakens. When used with care, awareness, and empathy, questions can shift perspectives, build trust, and expand possibility.
Whether you’re a therapist, leader, or everyday communicator, remember: every question paints a picture. Make sure the image you create brings clarity, compassion, and connection.
